Nervous Operator - Wandering the Ruins of a Memory Palace

from Sonic Memories by mediaartscommittee

/

about

This piece was created using various field recordings collected over the past 10 years in Vancouver, Chicago, and Mexico City/Tepoztlán. It is an attempt to create a sonic landscape that highlights and contrasts these locations. This work is also to a certain extent autobiographical, as every sound used represents various lived moments. By using an iterative composition process, sounds were tested against each other until a compelling blend was found. The resulting piece is an almost dreamlike journey through memories which would fade if not for the recordings themselves.

Producing a signature style of pensive electronics since 2010, Nervous Operator takes cues from industrial, ambient and dub, with the result typically characterized by syncopated rhythms churning under atmospheres. A founding member of Vancouver's Sacred Sound Club, he has shared stages with acts from Merzbow to Beneath and has had releases on labels such as Isla (as Usd.) and Multiplex Recordings. He has an upcoming release with Jacktone sublabel Dreamtone to be released later in 2021.
