I wanted to make something about holding space, so when I saw that the residency’s theme was secrets, I thought to make a sound environment that could hold space for my inner selves: a place that would feel safe, so we could talk openly. At the beginning of the residency period I recorded an improvisation on my Elektron Analog Four synthesizer. I was playing with a very shimmery, expressive pad sound and found that if I set the release time to “infinite,” making the notes sustain forever, there were deep sonic details to get lost in. Very small adjustments to the sound suddenly became major events. Once I added a slow LFO on the filter to create a tidal feeling, this simple patch quickly began to feel like “a place.” During the improvisation, and every time I listened back, I felt an all- pervading calm; something about this sound world had brought an inner protector to the surface. I sent the recording to 10 people, asking how it made them feel. Many respondents said it made them anxious or frustrated, though all of them said it evoked “space” – an image of openness that suggested I was on the right path. I spent several weeks recording more studies with their notes in mind, ironing out technical issues and letting the sound palette evolve over time. The process became a meditation. I would sit down to work each day, and an internal dialogue would unfold as I built the sound up and tore it down again. Here, my secrets were no longer drowned out. Near the end of the residency Lexi Pisisk î s asked me to perform on a mixed-media bill that also included a DJ, poetry, rap, and performance art. When I described my process, she decided to put me on last, since a lot of the work being presented was very emotionally taxing. I made some final adjustments to the form of the piece with this in mind, making sure there was a long entrance and clear release at the end. After the show many people said the piece felt like a long, warm hug, and I took that as my proof of concept. I recorded the final version the following morning.
