about

Artist statement

As an indigenous person in so called Canada, my culture has been stripped away due to genocide and assimilation, primarily through the residential school system, where my kokum was taken against her will at the age of five.

In my practice, I capture the audio of my attempts at reconnecting to my traditions and cultural practices. I emphasize the barriers of learning the language, song, and dance that was made illegal and actively stripped away from us by the Canadian colonial government and Catholic Church. I use distortion, delay/looping, and glitch effects to represent how mentally, emotionally, and practically difficult it is to learn these things after experiencing cultural genocide.

My work includes mistakes, highlights blunders and accentuates imperfection through repetition in order to convey an audible expression of the struggle to learn and connect to my culture in mid-life since I was unable to be raised within my culture.

My creative work is in dedication to Indigenous strength and perseverance. This process is a continuation of the traditional practice of Indigenous storytelling in a way that is adapted to my lived experiences and those of my relatives

Project description

My piece …..
As an Indigenous person of Turtle Island, conventional themes of self care are less applicable to me. Instead, I sought to deepen my practice of Indigenous ways of living in spite of the ongoing cultural genocide against us. Meaningful self care for me is reconnecting through language, song, and dance.

This piece is an auditory record of learning a traditional Cree men’s dance. A practice I have been unable to learn through my family due to the direct impact of the Residential School System. The audio in this work are the literal first steps of this process collected through contact mic’s strapped to my feet. Each misplaced foot marks a new loop in the audio until it builds and builds into a distorted culmination of sound and perseverance
