"Paruparo" is a sound art piece meant to provide a soundscape for rituals of Babaylan: gender-fluid mediums of the precolonial era of the Philippines. Babaylan were known to communicate with the dead as well as perform divination, sorcery, and healing for the community. "Paruparo" in Tagalog means butterfly. In creating this piece, I thought of the animistic traditions of our history as well as the ethnic dance called the "tinikling" (a dance involving the slapping of two bamboo sticks together as its dancers tiptoe in and over them). These elements inspired the rhythmic correspondence of the bass and the hats. The main melody is a sample of kulintang (gongs played like drums), an instrument common in the Philippines but used throughout Southeast Asia. The rhythmic modulation of this sample along with the low-pass filter intends to add a trance-like and distant quality to the ritual in question.

“There is little known about the rituals of the Babaylan which is why much of this project was left for the imagination. The main concepts that I wanted to capture were their mysticism as spiritual mediums, their inherent femininity, as well as the expression of healing performed through sound.” – IHA
