Nazanin Oghanian - milky uniform suspension

about

Description: ‘milky uniform suspension’, is the first work from the ‘Patient #17301’ series. This series unfolds the layers of control related to the medicalization of my body that began during my childhood in Iran for the condition known as ‘precocious puberty’. This condition is used in medical language for pubertal development earlier than the clinical “normative” age of puberty. During the seven years of treatment (from the age of eight to fifteen), I had to go to the hospital precisely every twenty-eight days to receive hormonal injections. Every month, as I waited to receive the injections, I was on one side of a hospital curtain listening to the fragmented sounds of a nurse mixing and preparing the medicine and the needles. The title of the work, “milky uniform suspension,” is the technical description of the correct viscosity of the hormonal liquid that I could hear being prepared. The ways in which the sounds evoked my imagination, of what I could not see, and how this continues to be folded into my memories of the medicalization of my own body, are the focus of this work. In this work, you hear the sounds of some found objects through which I studied, explored, and examined in a performative act.

Nazanin Oghanian is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice unfolds from critical reflection around notions of the body, identity, gender, memory, politics, and the establishment of a constant dialectic between the individual and the social. Her recent work explores power relations and the ways in which women’s bodies are controlled through the medicalization of their bodies and reproductive health. She currently lives and works on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh peoples, also known as Vancouver. She is a recipient of the BC Binning Memorial Fellowship and her work has been exhibited across Iran and Canada including AHVA Gallery, Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden, and Morris And Helen Belkin Art Gallery.
