Snack Witch AKA Joni Cheung - From Scratch

about

Taking snippets from a phone conversation between the artist and their father, From Scratch (2021) is a reflection on Cheung's family connections to 茶餐廳|cha chaan tengs|tea restaurants—located within and outside of Chinatowns—across several different continents. Using sounds captured while the artist made 焗豬扒飯| baked pork chop rice (a staple dish found at many cha chaan tengs and one of Cheung's and her father's favourite dishes) at home for the first time, the artist wades through physical and intangible time and place to mull over and digest how spaces of nourishment such as these can function as living archives for diasporic
communities.
