Alexandre Klinke - First Sounds

about

First Sounds is a music piece divided in three parts that searches into the earliest sonic memories of a child. It is inspired by my personal experience of being a father of two children, observing their developmental changes, and the sounds that surround them in the earlier stages of their life. Body sounds, sound-making toys, and home recordings constitute its source material. These were captured with digital recorders, reel-to-reel and cassette tape machines, using an assortment of microphones—including a contact microphone and a fetal doppler—creating diverse textures, noises and sonic environments, and mixed with tonal music elements.
Part I: Womb imagines the experience of a baby still inside the mother’s belly.
Part II: Toys is composed of sounds from several different cradle toys and other objects.
Part III: Playtime, combines a home recording of kids playing, with a minimalistic piano version of the Brazilian folk song “Peixe Vivo”, a reference to my own childhood and cultural background.

Alexandre Klinke is a composer and media artist from Sao Paulo, Brazil, based in Vancouver, BC. With a background as a musician, as well as a videographer and video editor, his works encompass different fields such as video art, multimedia and installation art, music for film, sound design and performance. In his music pieces, the juxtaposition of the warm and noisy characteristics of analog media, with the hi-fi crispness and endless editing/processing possibilities of the digital medium, results in a variety of textures that are evocative of different times (present/past), spaces (internal/external) and places.
