In Human Whale Songs (2021), I vocally imitate the sounds of humpback whales, killer whales, beluga whales, narwhals, and bowhead whales as recorded in Marine Mammal Fund’s 1992 field recording album Songs of the Deep.Their sounds consist mainly of howls, grunts, moans, and clicks. Bowhead Whale (Baleana Mysticetus)_ArcticOcean is one of the eight tracks featuring different species of whales in this project. Human Whale Songs builds on my inquiry into hypothetical conversions between different species under particular circumstances, for instance the overlap of territory, behavior, and vocal language. The audio experience also plays with the archival and collective memories acquired through audiovisual media, rather than in-person encounters.

Yi Xin Tong works with installation, video, and sound to analyze human culture’s dynamic relationship with nature at a geological scale and intervenes in societal beliefs in value, decency, and rationality. His sound works take form as simulation of noise with field recordings, site-specific installations, and vocal experiments on languages of humans and other animals. Tong has exhibited at Brooklyn BRIC Biennial, Guangzhou Airport Biennale, UCCA Centre for Contemporary Art, chi K11 art museum, National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, Alyssa Davis Gallery, Vanguard Gallery, VIVO, and NARS Foundation.
