A song I sing in darkness is an effort of [un]forgetting. Collecting materials from public and personal archive sources and Vietnamese films and TV sound track, the track grapples with feelings of sustaining in the ungraspable space of memory. Through manipulating and layering these sources, I try to hold on/recall/meditate upon my personal past memory of the Sài Gòn soundscape, which has been altered by distance, by time, by gentrification process, by the violent history and world memory. In abstracting the diverse sonic experience, the piece aspires to be an impermanent imagination of what memory had been and could have been, of place that can't never be once more, and the songs we have to hold on to, at the infinity of darkness.

Hân Phạm is an emerging artist and a documentary/ experimental filmmaker from Saigon, Vietnam. Working with experimental moving images and soundscapes, her works think through the ephemerality of memory, language and history in relation to the constantly changing landscapes, rooting in the inbetweeness of distance as space for reflection and healing. She has exhibited her films at Vancouver International Film Festival, DOXA Documentary Film Festival and Milwaukee Underground Film Festival. Her multimedia and soundscape artwork has also been a part of Vines Arts Festival, Mount Pleasant Community Art Screen, and Media Arts Commitee. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Simon Fraser University.
